Action Fraud UK reports continued reports of individuals being contacted via social media and messaging apps with fake job offers requiring upfront payment for a Certificate of Sponsorship.
Action Fraud warns of rise in fake UK job sponsorship scams
Action Fraud UK, the national reporting centre for fraud and cybercrime, has documented a sustained pattern of visa sponsorship scams targeting overseas workers seeking employment in the UK.
The common pattern.
Victims are typically contacted through social media platforms, messaging apps, or informal recruitment channels. The scammer poses as an employer or recruitment agent and offers a Skilled Worker position. They then request upfront payment for a "sponsorship fee," "CoS processing charge," or "security bond" before issuing any documents.
Why this is always fraudulent.
Under UKVI rules, licensed sponsors are prohibited from charging workers for the cost of sponsorship. The Immigration Skills Charge, Certificate of Sponsorship fees, and all associated costs must be paid by the employer. Any request for a worker to pay these costs is a violation of sponsor duties and a significant indicator of fraud.
What to do if you are approached.
Do not send any money. Do not provide personal documents. Verify the employer independently through the UKVI Register of Licensed Sponsors and Companies House. Report the approach to Action Fraud UK.
Some fraudulent CoS documents appear convincing at first glance. SponsorShield verifies your document against official UK government records: the UKVI Register of Licensed Sponsors, Companies House, and current UKVI salary requirements.
